TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The Catholic Diocese of Tucson has planned a special Mass to pray for victims of the typhoon that struck the Philippines just over a week ago.
Bishop Gerald Kicanas will lead the Mass on Wednesday evening at St. Augustine Cathedral. Filipino and Vietnamese parish choirs will join the cathedral's choir in providing music, and priests from across the diocese are expected to attend.
The bishop tells the Arizona Daily Star (http://bit.ly/1ebwBJy) the diocese is joining the nation in mourning for the lives lost and the destruction of property caused by Typhoon Haiyan.
According to the latest official count Sunday, the Nov. 8 storm killed 3,974 people and about 1,200 are missing.
Last weekend, the bishop asked all 78 parishes in the diocese to have a special collection for relief efforts.
